Looking back on our last two results, I’ve got mixed emotions. On the weekend of the 5th April, we pulled off a fantastic win against promotion-chasing Worcester Park at the Fortress of Glebelands. Every player was a 10 out of 10, and tactically we got it spot on against a strong side. To top it off, Ben Beazley scored what can only be described as a goal of the season contender, an absolute rocket.
Rewind: Beazley caps off 13-pass wonder goal
But just four days later, we let that momentum slip away with a reality check against Frenches Athletic. We were punished by two set pieces, didn’t create enough chances, and ultimately didn’t show up. It was a frustrating contrast, and sadly, that’s been the story of our season. We’ve turned up for the bigger teams, but haven’t found that same level against others. It’s something we’ll look to address next season.
As we head into the final stretch of the season, things are still a little up in the air. We don’t yet know whether we’ve got a quarter-final replay or a semi-final to prepare for, and we’ve got two (possibly three) league games remaining. The uncertainty hasn’t been ideal for players or management, but we’re staying focused on what we do know: we’ve got two very winnable games ahead, and the chance to finish with Cranleigh FC’s highest-ever points total at Step 7. We’re already 8 points up on last season.
Our attention is also turning to next season and building a squad capable of pushing for promotion. I’m delighted that some key players have already committed, including Joe Barnes, Harry Nicholas and James Faulkner. That’s a huge boost, and I’m expecting a busy pre-season in terms of recruitment and preparation.
So the goal now is clear: finish strong, hopefully book ourselves a cup final, and use it all as a springboard into next season.
And a quick reminder: The club’s End of Season Celebration is on Saturday 17th May at Glebelands. There will be a BBQ, DJ, raffle (with prizes including tickets to watch Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League), awards, and games for the kids, it’ll be a cracking day for everyone involved.
A few days later, we have our End of Season Awards Night on Friday 23rd May and the Cranleigh Village Social Club. We’ll crown Players’ Player and hand out the big honours for the seniors. Would love to see as many of you there as possible.
A big thank you, as always, to those who come and support the lads week in, week out, it really does make a difference. Let’s get a good crowd down at Glebelands again this Saturday.
Up the Cranes!
