Top-of-the-table Ash United faced a spirited challenge at Glebelands School from a resilient and determined Cranleigh FC Women in this Surrey Division 1 clash. Despite battling against the elements—with 40mph winds and icy rain yet again making home games a gritty affair—the Cranleigh team showcased their growth and character throughout the match.

Ash capitalised on two first-half errors to take a 2-0 lead into the break, but Cranleigh never let their heads drop. Playing their signature ball-on-the-ground style, they pressed high and created a few chances of their own, demonstrating they could hold their own against the league leaders.

The second half was a testament to Cranleigh’s resilience and defensive organisation. Goalless after the break, they matched Ash with their relentless pressing, tackling, and well-executed counter-attacks. It was an impressive show of progress, reflecting how far this team has come in just a year.

At this stage last season, Cranleigh carried a negative goal difference of -91; now, after 10 games, that figure has been reduced to just -4. It’s a remarkable improvement that highlights the team’s continued focus on development and determination to compete.

The Player of the Match could have gone to several standout performers, but Lucy Badger deservedly took the accolade for her dominant defensive display, keeping Ash at bay throughout the second half.

Cranleigh now set their sights on their next challenge, away to Guildford City on Sunday, 2nd February.
