Cranleigh Firsts kicked off the New Year in style with a commanding performance against Hersham Firsts, sealing an impressive 6–0 victory on the 3G pitch at Glebelands.
A bright start to 2025
After a strong finish to the first half of the season, there was renewed optimism around the squad. Managers Paul Jones and Sam Carpenter had been working hard to integrate new talent, and the results were evident. Narrowing a squad of 23 down to 16 was no easy task, but the competition for places has injected a new level of energy into the team.
Booking the 3G pitch at Glebelands proved a masterstroke, as most fixtures in the region fell victim to the wintry weather. Despite the near-zero temperatures, 50–60 dedicated spectators turned out to support the teams, creating a fantastic atmosphere.

First Half: fireworks from the Cranes
The match began at a frenetic pace, with both teams showing intent. However, it was Cranleigh who struck first, as Josh Kipping powered home a bullet header from a superb Ben Beazley cross just 10 minutes in.
Moments later, debutant Lewis Matton announced himself in style, latching onto a perfectly weighted George Barrettthrough ball to double Cranleigh’s lead.
With confidence flowing, Cranleigh dominated possession and capitalised on their momentum. Will Smith added a third after excellent work from Emin Can Acar, and Matton grabbed his second of the match, this time assisted by Smith.
Just before half-time, Harry Nicholas provided a pinpoint pass that RJ Owusu coolly converted for his first goal in a Cranleigh shirt. At 5–0, the Cranes delivered a first-half performance to warm even the coldest spectators.
Second Half: a professional finish
The second half lacked the spark of the first, as Hersham rallied with a spirited defensive effort and their goalkeeper made several impressive saves. While Cranleigh could have been more clinical, their dominance was never in doubt.
A sixth goal eventually arrived when Smith netted his second of the game after a brilliant run and cross from Makenzie Mortimer.
Full time
It was a near-perfect display from Cranleigh, with credit also going to Hersham for their resilience and sportsmanship. The referee officiated the match superbly, ensuring a competitive yet fair contest.
