Cranleigh Vets were narrowly defeated in a hard-fought Runwick Cup match against Headley Vets, ending in a 4-3 loss on a blustery, rainy morning in Borden. Adverse weather conditions gave Headley an early advantage, and they adapted better initially, taking an early lead.

Cranleigh rallied, however, and took control of the game to go into half-time ahead 3-2, with goals from Laurence Emmett and Paul Inwood, plus an own goal from the hosts. Early in the second half, Headley equalised through a penalty, and they continued to press, eventually breaking the deadlock with a well-taken low finish 15 minutes from the final whistle to secure the 4-3 advantage.

In the game’s closing moments, Cranleigh had a strong penalty appeal that was controversially given as a free kick just outside the box—despite many believing it was clearly within the area. In the end, Headley’s determination saw them through, and Cranleigh wished them well in the next round.
